Technician Training Classes
ABB
ABB ACH580 Startup Class (WA & OR)
This class was written by Johnson Barrow ABB VFD Product Specialists. It aims to teach 90% of the needed skill sets for programming VFDs for various HVAC applications, and to verify (measure) for proper operation. Students receive printed 150-page booklets divided into 8 tabbed sections with all the information below and are free to make any markups and take the booklets with them for use on their future startups. The majority of the listed tasks are practiced on live demo drives during the class.
3-Phase dynamics with VFDs
How VFDs work and vary motor speed
Measuring input vs. output power: What’s different?
Why VFD technology dictates installation guidelines
Checking rotation in a VFD without bypass compared to a VFD with bypass
ABB E-Clipse Bypass: How an intelligent bypass controller works
Necessary tools
Avoiding common startup and troubleshooting mistakes
ACH580 without Bypass
Reading the VFD keypad display (the “dashboard”)
Keypad button functions
Common warnings & faults
ACH580’s new menu structure: Parameters vs. an outline “checklist” format
ACH580 control terminal review
Initial minimal startup exercise
Checking BAS commands and feedback without removing the VFD’s cover
Additional programming add-ons, like:
Changing the drive name
Getting rid of “panel loss” nuisance faults
Downstream motor disconnect detection
Over speeding (operation over 60Hz)
Current-sensitive run status relay setup (i.e. “Hawkeye relay”)
Traditional damper control from the VFD terminals
BACnet setup: Practice on a live BACnet trunk, and verify it works through diagnostics
ACH580 with E-Clipse Bypass
Common warnings & alarms
Review of keypad display and button functions
Bypass control terminals and how you handle control wires differently
Initial minimal startup exercise
Checking BAS commands and feedback—without removing the cover
Additional programming add-ons, like:
Setting up for “safety Open” message on safety trip
Bypass start delay (programmable)
Bypass disable
Traditional damper control
BACnet setup: Practice on a live BACnet trunk, and verify it works through diagnostics
